Abstract

1361688 Electro-photographic processes MITA INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 60529/71 Heading G2H [Also in Division H1] An electro-photographic process utilizes a member comprising a conductive base, a photoconductive layer and a surface insulating layer (optionally with an intermediate insulating layer disposed within the photo-conductive layer or between the photo-conductive layer and the conductive base) and comprises: (a) uniformly electrostatically charging the surface insulating layer using a D. C. corona discharge (b) imagewise exposing the surface and simultaneously (or immediately thereafter) uniformly electrostatically charging the surface with an A. C. corona discharge of asymmetric waveform, the major component of the waveform being of the opposite polarity to that of the D. C. discharge (c) dissipating the electrostatic charge remaining at the interface between the surface insulating layer and the photo-conductive layer, by uniformly exposing the surface or by allowing sufficient time to elapse before developing. This produces an electrostatic latent image in which the non-imagewise exposed areas D bear charge 6' of the same polarity as that of the D. C. discharge and the exposed areas L bear charge 6" of the opposite polarity. This latent image may be developed with toner 6' t charged to either polarity to produce a background-free positive or negative copy. Circuits for producing the asymmetric discharge are described Figs. 5-8 (not shown).
