Abstract
123,164. Wheatley, D. Y. Feb. 14, 1918. Adjusting centrally-pivoted axles for steering.- In self-propelled balance or one-way ploughs adapted for use as tractors, and in which the engine and main wheels are mounted on a frame which is movable relatively to the main implement frame for steering purposes, such as is described in Specification 111,264, special means are provided for mounting and moving the engine frame. The engine frame 2 is balanced on the axle A of the main wheels 11 and is connected to the main frame 1 bv chains 3<c> which are fastened to plates 36 provided with rollers running on guide-bars on the frame 2. A drum on the axle is connected centrally to the frame 1 by chains B. Steering is effected by moving the frame 2 and wheels 11 by means such as the rods 12, cardan joints 13, rod 14, winding-drums 15 and chains 16. Movement of the axle A relatively to the frame 1 is provided for by mounting its bearings 18 in open links 19 which are pivoted at 20 and are provided with hooked parts at their upper ends engaging with flanges on the frame 1. The bearings 18 may be moved vertically by screws 24. In a modification one of the pivoted links 19 is dispensed with, and the axle A turns about one of its bearings. According to the Provisional Specification, spherical bearings are employed, one of which is movable along the axle, and the machine may be steered by moving the links 19 or the frame 2 by worm gearing &c.
