Abstract
1,230,273. Blasting. WHEELABRATOR CORP. 1 Dec., 1969 [10 April, 1969], No. 58604/69. Heading B3D. [Also in Division G3] A surface treating machine comprises a chamber 2 into which a workpiece 30 is moved through an opening 12 provided with a roll-up door 14. The workpiece is carried by a motordriven carriage 32 movable on tracks 34. The carriage may be moved to the extent necessary to ensure treatment of the entire surface of the workpiece; additionally, it may be provided with a turntable surface. At least one side wall of the housing has a vertically extending opening 18 in which is mounted for up and down movement a turret 20 also arranged to be rotated or oscillated. The turret 20 carries throwing wheels 22, 24 to propel surface treating material through an opening 21 in the turret against the workpiece in the chamber. The turret is pivoted in a frame 54, wiper seals 57 being provided, and is oscillated by a reversible motor 56. For effecting vertical movement of the frame 54 a chain 92, Figs. 4, 9, having its ends connected to an angle member 98 of the frame is trained over a sprocket 90 mounted on a vertical support 91 and a sprocket 94 on the shaft of a reversible motor 96. Counterweights 100 movable in guides 102 are connected to the frame 54 by cables 104 trained over pulleys 106. Guide rollers 108, 110 on the frame ensure stability. The opening 18 is sealed against the escape of surface treating material from the chamber 2 by roller curtains. The ends of curtain 38, Figs. 1, 7, are attached to the upper end of the turret 20 and to a roller 42 mounted on top of the chamber; the ends of curtain 40 are attached to the lower end of the turret 20 and to a roller 44 mounted at the bottom of the housing. To maintain the curtains taut for effective sealing, a cable 45 is wound on a reel 46 on the shaft of roller 42 in the direction opposite to that in which the curtain 38 is wound, and a cable 50 is wound on a reel 52 on the shaft of roller 44 in the direction opposite to that in which the curtain 40 is wound, the cables being connected by a coil spring 48. Guide rollers 51, 53 press the curtains against the sides of the opening 18. A storage hopper for surface treating material is located on top of chamber 2. At the bottom of the hopper are two tubes containing valves. One tube delivers through telescoping tube 120, Fig. 4, auxiliary hopper 124 and tube 82 to throwing wheel 24; the other tube delivers through telescoping tube 212, auxiliary hopper and tube 84 to throwing wheel 22. Instead of telescoping tubes bellows type tubes may be used. An automatic programming system is provided wherein magnetic tape, punched tape or punched cards control the desired positioning of the turret 20 and the workpiece carriage 32, and optionally the duration of stay in each position. The system may also control the flow of treating material and the supply of heated air or gases when it is desired to perform the surface treatment in atmospheres of this character. Manual override may be provided.
