Abstract

1,228,742. Rear view driving mirrors. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 18 April, 1968 [26 June, 1967], No. 29340/67. Heading B7J. A rear view driving mirror for a road vehicle comprises a moulded support 11 securable to a vehicle body panel, a mirror portion 15 plated at 25 to form a reflecting surface and having a transparent synthetic resin sheet 27 forming a less reflecting surface, and an overcentre mechanism which holds the mirror portion 15 in either of two angular positions relative to the support 11 so that dazzle to the driver from following headlamps at night can be reduced by selecting the less reflecting surface. The mirror portion 15 is pivoted at 17 to a connector 13 connected by a lockable ball-and-socket 14, 12 to the support 11. The over-centre mechanism comprises a spring-urged ball 19 carried in a hollow part 18 of the mirror portion 15 and engaging one of two recesses 22, 23 in the connector 13; or comprises in another embodiment, a solid part 18 having a transverse slot in its free end engaged by a pre-stressed loop spring which engages in a single transverse slot in the connector 13.
