Abstract

1,228,102. Gear pumps. CHANDLER EVANS Inc. April 17, 1969 [April 29, 1968], No.19789/69. Heading F1F. A gear pump comprising a housing 4, Fig. 3, closed at its ends to form a cavity housing on parallel shafts 63, 64 a pair of intermeshing gears 8, 9, side-plates on either side of the gears and movable peripheral sealing elements 12, 13 urged into sealing engagement by a spring 17 and pump discharge pressure acting beneath a platform 10 into sealing engagement with the tips of a plurality of gear teeth includes pins 18, 19 co-operating with elongated slots in the elements 12, 13 and axially slidable in holes in the side-plates so that sideloads generated by pump discharge pressure in the discharge chamber 16 is transmitted to the sideplates such that area in the side-plates between the pins is in tension to reduce bearing loads and wear on the shafts and gears. In another embodiment, the platform 10 is provided with a pair of protuberances about which each of the sealing elements pivot and the elongated slots are disposed radially with respect to axes of the gear shafts. In a further embodiment, the protuberances are formed on the undersides of the sealing elements and the sealing elements are hingedly connected together with the hinge pin lying in a plane normal to a plane containing the shaft axes and equidistant from these axes.
