Abstract
1,228,039. Tampons and catamenial appliances. N. J. WATERBURY, N. R. DUPONT, J. J. MATONIS and F. B. HASKETT. 7 Aug., 1968, No. 37650/68. Heading A5R. A vaginal tampon 1 or sanitary napkin comprises a body of compressed absorbent fibres 5 with a therapeutically active quantity of vitamin A contained therein. The absorbent fibres 5 which may be of cellulosic fibres such as cotton or rayon are contained in an outer wrapper 3 of paper or cellulosic material with a withdrawal string 7 attached, and the vitamin A 11, is contained in one, Fig. 2, or more, Figs. 3 or 4 (not shown), capsules 9, formed of materials such as gelatin, egg white, or polyethylene, polypropylene or other synthetic resins such as to be easily frangible by finger pressure before insertion of the tampon, by body bent, Fig. 5 (not shown), or by pulling a string 13 before insertion of the tampon. A perforated end wall 15, may hold the capsule in position. The vitamin A may be distributed throughout the tampon in microcapsules, Fig. 4 (not shown), or it may be microencapsulated in the outer wrapper 3, Fig. 5 (not shown). The vitamin A may be contained in the capsule either in aqueous or mineral oil suspension together with other vitamins, minerals and nutrients or with stabilisers, anti-oxidants such as alkyl phenols, alkyl bisphenols, bisphenol sulphides, quinones and derivatives thereof, or surface active agents. Chlorophyll may also be used, to eliminate odours, or estrogenic substances may be employed in aqueous solution with the vitamin A. In addition the vitamin A may be contained within the tampon or sanitary napkin in powder form in a phosphate carrier. The amount of vitamin A may constitute from 0.01% to 10% of the total weight of the tampon. Coloured markings may be placed on the wrapper to indicate where pressure should be applied to fracture the capsule or capsules.
