Abstract

1,227,187. Visibility meters. F. FRUNGEL. Oct.1 1968 [Nov.3, 1967], No.46473/68. Heading G1A. A visibility meter comprises an ultraviolet transmitter in the form of an A.C. supplied mercury vapour discharge lamp and an ultraviolet responsive gas-filled photo-cell having cadmium electrodes. Normally, ultraviolet light from the transmitter is not incident on the photo-cell but, in the presence of fog, ultraviolet light is scattered towards the photo-cell which is caused to conduct and cause triggering of an indicating device. In one arrangement, Fig.1, the photo-cell 3 is shielded from the lamp 2 by a wall 10, attached to rain cover 1, which cuts out rays diverging less than 10‹ from the optical axis. On receipt of scattered light above a certain level, a relay 8 is actuated to light a fog indicator lamp 15. A measure of the visibility may be given by meter 14 measuring the position of a variable diaphragm 13, which may alternatively be adjacent the photocell 3 and which forms part of a retro-active measurement system with servomotor SM. The meter 14 may have a scale divided into just two or three visibility sizes. A plurality of photo-cells of different alarm thresholds may be provided. In a second arrangement, Fig.2 (not shown), the transmitting lamp and photo-cell are side-by-side in a radar-like configuration.
