1342266 Photo-electric aerosol detection TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L M ERICSSON 15 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 33378/71 Heading G1A In an aerosol detector including one measuring chamber 11 arranged for rapid and another 12 for slow entrance of aerosol from the surrounding air a photo-cell arrangement 51/52 receives radiation beams that have travelled through the respective chambers to produce a signal indicating comparative aerosol concentration in the two chambers. The light path from a constant or fluctuating source 3, e.g. a glow-lamp, halogen lamp, gaseous discharge tube or light-emitting diode, includes crossed polarizers 6, 7 and a photo-cell 5. In the absence of aerosol, plane-polarized light resulting from polarizer 6 does not pass through polarizer 7 and hence there is no photocell output. If an aerosol, caused e.g. by a fire in a building, enters the light path through apertures 2 in the casing, the polarization state of each beam is changed and some radiation falls on the photo-cell. The two beams terminate on respective concentrically-arranged photo-cells (51, 52) connected in a bridge Fig. 5 (not shown). An aerosol penetrates to the outer path more quickly than to the inner one (through openings 9) and hence the bridge becomes unbalanced. An alarm is actuated if the unbalance signal exceeds a pre-set threshold. A plurality of the aerosol detecting arrangements may be provided in a single building.
