Abstract
1,226,349. Ingot moulds; casting processes. H. J. DAUSSAN. 22 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 14029/68. Heading B3F. In a method of improving the texture of ferrous metals cast in ingot moulds, a mould A is used incorporating in its side wall 1 a material M having a greater heat conductivity than that of the bulk of the material of the mould. The material M is situated in the side wall to be nearer to the inner surface of the mould than to the outer surface of the mould. The mould has a lid C with vents 7a, 7b and is located by tangs 2, 3. A cast-iron base B closes the lower end of the mould. The side walls are cast iron and the material M is mainly copper. The material M forms a solid ring 4 around the cavity at the top of the mould with solid projections 6 to 6q extending to adjacent the base B. Above the ring 4 is a ring of compressed copper scrap which may contain some iron and a further solid copper ring 5 which engages a copper plating 7 on the lower half of the lid C. When top pouring, melt impinges on the base B and rises up the sidewalls of the mould. Heat from the melt is conducted by the material M upwards to the ring 4. When the mould has been filled to the top the lid is placed upon it. Heat is restored to the top of the ingot from the ring 4 and to lining 7, the ring 4 acting as a hottop. Bottom pouring is effected with the lid C in place.
