Compressively crimped, machine yarn is produced by guiding individual component yarns parallel to one another and without gaps therebetween into and through a .compression chamber which may comprise two compartments, separating the emerging crimped yarns, e.g. by means of a comb guide, optionally, winding the yarns in parallel on a cylindrical bobbin, subsequently guiding them at a distance of at least 3 m.m. apart through delivery apparatus and, under identical conditions, through a large angle (which is the same for each yarn) thence to a cording station whereat the yarns are finally intertwisted. One of the feed rollers for the compression chamber may be hollow ground or flat-grooved and the other roller may be plain surfaced or similarly and complementarily ground or grooved to form a shaped yarn passage between the rollers. As shown, the component yarns 5 are withdrawn tangentially from rotatable supply bobbins 2 and 3 and are delivered from traversing yarn separators 4 to a separating comb 6, over roller 7 to delivery cylinder 8 and separator roller 8', thence through collecting guide 15 and guides 16 forming a symmetrical cording polygon 9 and corresponding in number, e.g. four, to the number of yarns or an integral multiple thereof so as to ensure a balanced distribution of yarns. The yarns then pass through a balloon guide 10 and a ring traveller 13 to the spindle 11 whereby they are intertwisted. The vertical height of the pyramid defined by guides 15, 16, is 0.2-2.0 times the diameter of a circle circumscribing the base formed by guides 16. Guide 10 reciprocates vertically in synchronism with the ring rail but with a shorter stroke and is not normally less than a minimum distance from the base of the pyramid which corresponds to 0.8 times the distance separating the guide 15 from such base.
