A sabot projectile, Fig. 1, comprises a subcalibre core 1, e.g. of tungsten carbide, a sabot 4 having a groove formed by two substantially parallel side walls 21 and 50 and a bottom surface 24, and a jacket 51, e.g. of nylon, fitting into the groove to form a gas-tight connection and being formed with an integral driving band 3. A front part 5 of the sabot is divided by longitudinal slits into segments formed with teeth 17. A segmented sleeve 15 is retained between a shoulder 34 of the jacket and a segmented locking ring 14. The jacket is formed with longitudinal weakening grooves 36, weight-reducing pockets 38, and a line of weakness 45 in a closure 44. Knurling 48 may be provided on the groove wall 21. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the teeth 17 are dispensed with and the sleeve 15, which, in this case is integral with the locking ring 14, is retained by a curled edge 53 of the sabot. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the sleeve is retained by screw-threading 56. On firing the projectile, air pressure bursts the jacket closure 44 and the jacket disintegrates into segments under the effect of centrifugal force. The segments of the front part 5 of the sabot, which are subject to the centrifugal force acting on the locking ring 14 and sleeve 15, are torn off so that the core 1 is completely freed from the sabot.
