Aerating; plant.-In the activated sludge process for treating sewage, such as is described in Specifications 22952/13, 729/14, 19916/14, 21976/14, and 1141/15, the sludge is removed from the sewagetreatment tank, aerated in a separate tank, and returned to the sewage-treatment tank to act on a fresh portion of sewage. The sludge may be passed through a series of settling tanks to cause it to separate into several portions, and the more suitable portions only aerated and used for treatment of fresh sewage. Fig. 4 is a plan of apparatus for the latter form of the process. The sewage passes from a detritus separating and preliminary mixing tank 2 to a treatment tank 1 where it is aerated and mixed with the activated sludge. The treated sewage passes to a succession of tanks 6 having pyramidal bottoms in which the sludge is deposited in a series of portions of different densities which pass by pipes 7 to a series of chambers 8. From the chambers 8 the sludge may pass by valves 27 to a tank 10, where it is aerated, and whence it passes to the treatment tank 1; or it may be delivered by air lifts from the chambers 8 to a discharge trough 18. Plant with, a circular treating tank, which may be of the form shown in Specification 113,333, is described. Specifications 22736/14 and 111,720 also are referred to.
