Abstract

111,720. Jones, W., and Jones & Attwood. Dec. 9, 1916. Aerating. - In treating sewage and other impure liquids by aeration in the presence of bacterial sludge, air is supplied to the liquid below the surface and bacterial sludge is supplied at or near the surface. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a pipe 3 is provided with induction nozzles 2 arranged in open funnels on pipes 4 provided towards the bottom of the tank 1 with discharge openings 5, raw sewage being forced through the pipe 3 by a pump 24 and entering the tank along with an induced supply of air. Sludge gravitates to a sump 6 and is delivered, through a pipe 7, to an aerating - tank 13 and thence to a pipe 11 provided with nozzles 10 for delivering sludge to the tank 1. The raw sewage passes over a weir 21 into an aerating-tank 20 and thence through a well 23 to the pump 24. The effluent from the tank 1 passes over a weir 25 into a pipe 26. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 6, air is distributed uniformly by means of apertured pipes 30 which are caused by reaction to rotate about a vertical axis. The pipes 30 communicate with a pipe 4 which is provided with an induction nozzle 2, raw sewage being forced by a pump 24 through a pipe 3' leading to the pipe 4. To facilitate the settlement of sludge, the tanks may as shown be provided with an inclined bottom; further, the airsupply devices 5, 30 may be arranged at some distance above the bottom. A number of tanks such as are shown in Fig. 6 may be arranged in series.
