Abstract

1,224,164. Treating cellulosic materials. C. DUCKWORTH. 1 May, 1968 [4 May, 1967], No. 20797/67. Heading D1P. Cellulosic material is creaseproofed by impregnating it with an aqueous liquor containing a reactant resin and an acid catalyst, removing the material from the residual impregnating liquor, heating it in the wet state so as to effect wet crosslinking, drying it after heating without removing the reactant resin and passing the dried material to a curing stage in which dry cross-linking is effected. The material may be cotton fabric or a material comprising cellulosic fibres in admixture with wool, polyamide, polyester or acrylic fibres. The reactant resin may be an N-methylol compound or ether thereof, e.g. dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea or dimethylol ethyl triazone, which may be used in admixture with a compound which does not cross link with the cellulose in the heating stage, e.g. a melamine formaldehyde resin or derivative thereof, but contributes to the creaseproofing properties after curing. The catalyst may be an organic acid or mixture thereof with an acid salt or an acid salt, e.g. acetic, formic, oxalic or tartaric acid, magnesium chloride or zinc nitrate. The material may be impregnated with the aqueous liquor containing the reactant resin and acid catalyst and if desired a water repellent, rotproofing, softening or stiffening agent, excess liquid squeezed off on a pad mangle, heated while in the wet state e.g. by steaming with dry saturated steam at 100‹C, super-heated steam at atmospheric pressure at a temperature in excess of 100‹C or dry saturated steam at above atmosphere pressure and at a temperature in excess of 100‹C for less than one hour, dried at a temperature not in excess of 100‹C without neutralising or washing, optically made up into a garment, and cured at 140‹-160‹C.
