Abstract

122,186. Domestic Engineering Co., (Assignees of Midgley, T.). Jan. 10, 1018, [Convention date]. Valves. - In valves and other devices which are cooled by the vaporization of a small quantity of mercury contained in a hollow metallic member as described in Specifications 122,171 and 131,662, the hollow member is coated electrolytically or otherwise with a metal or an allov to facilitate the transfer of heat to the mercury. Fig. 1 shows a valve having cooling fins 13 and a hollow stem containing a small quantity of mercury 20. The stem is welded to the head 10, and the end of the stem is plugged and welded after the insertion of the mercury. Deposited upon the interior of the hollow stem is an amalgam comprising mercury and iron, tin, lead, brass, zinc, antimony, or other metal. The mercury in the stem may be converted into an amalgam by the addition thereto of tin or lead or both so that, in the event of a portion of the amalgam breaking away from the valve stem, the amalgam or the fault is removed. Brass, antimony, or zinc may be added to the mercury in the valve stem. Methods are described for depositing the metallic lining or amalgam electrolytically. The interior of the valve may be tinned and then coated with tin amalgam. To neutralize any acid which may remain the valve is cleaned with sodium hydroxide. A further method of plating is to rinse with zinc chloride and to heat the valve to 212‹ F. with tinlead amalgam prepared by melting soft solder in mercury. The valve is then washed with mercury.
