Abstract
122,171. Domestic Engineering Co., (Assignees of Kettering, C. F.). Jan. 10, 1918, [Convention date]. Cooling. - Valves which are subject to heat, and comprise a hollow stem containing a small quantity of mercury which is vaporized and condensed to cool the valve &c., are coated with amalgam or a metal on that portion of the hollow stem which contacts with the mercury. The Figure shows an internalcombustion engine valve having detachable cooling fins 32 and a head 22 containing a small quantity of mercury 40. The interior of the valve is coated with mercury amalgam or with a metal having a higher heat conductivity than the metal of the valve. An amalgam may itself be introduced through the stem of the valve or a metal, e.g. brass, may be inserted which will form an amalgam with the mercury in the head. The inner portion 23 of the valve head is welded to the outer portion 22 at 25 and the stem is welded to the head at 24.
