Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A method of making a stainless steel tube bend or elbow comprises making a hollow ring consisting of trough-like inner and outer diameter parts of semi-circular cross-section, which combine, when fitted together one inside the other with the trough mouths directed towards one another, to form a tube, and welding the parts together around their adjacent circumferential edges to form a hollow ring, which is cut into sections to form elbows and return bends. The inner member is formed from a tube by belling out its ends until its outer surface is of semicircular section, Fig. 4 (not shown). The outer part is made by forming a strip of stainless steel into a cylinder and then bulging it outwardly until the cylinder wall is semicircular in section, Fig. 7 (not shown). The edges of the shaped portions are chamfered to accommodate the weld material 6.
