Abstract

1,217,442. Ammonium polyphosphates. TENNESSEE CORP. 26 Feb., 1969, No. 10222/69. Heading C1A. Solid ammonium polyphosphates are prepared from superphosphoric acids, defined as acids containing polyphosphoric acids and water, by (a) feeding superphosphoric acid containing water, to a reactor, (b) reacting the acid with anhydrous NH 3 below 210‹ F. (99‹ C.) and (c) drawing off as vapour the water produced. The superphosphoric acid may be prediluted, inhibiting the resultant hydrolysis to orthophosphoric acid by keeping the time between dilution and ammoniation below 3 minutes and the temperature of the acid not above 135‹ F. The reacting superphosphoric acid preferably has the concentration of 60- 80% based on P 2 O 5 , or if prediluted 49-60%. The bed of the reactor is preferably below 185‹ F. Impurities, from the phosphoric acid, are soluble in ammonium polyphosphate solutions but not in ammonium orthophosphate solutions.
