Abstract

1,217,011. Glassy sodium polyphosphate. STICKSTOFFWERK PIESTERITZ VEB. 1 March, 1968, No. 10071/68. Heading C1A. Phosphite free glassy sodium polyphosphates of the Graham's salt type are produced from a solution or slurry of a mixture of NaH 2 PO 4 and NaH 2 PO 3 , in an oxidizing atmosphere, by removing water, melting the mixture at above 700‹ C. and then quenching the melt. The molar ratio NaH 2 PO 4 : NaH 2 PO 3 # 1 and preferably in the range 9 : 1 to 2 : 1. NaH 2 PO 4 may be partly or wholly replaced by an intermediate product of the condensation reaction: nNaH 2 PO 4 # (NaPO 3 ) n .H 2 O + (n - 1 )H 2 O. A preferred intermediate of this reaction is Ne 2 H 2 P 2 O 7 . The phosphate used in the process may be made from hypophosphite.
