1,213,827. Two-part couplings. G. MERTEN and W. MERTEN, [trading as MERIT-WERK, MERTEN & CO. K.G.]. 6 Nov., 1968 [18 Nov., 1967], No. 52647/68. Heading H2E. An electrical plug connector for a motor vehicle trailer comprises a contact assembly 2 and a concentric multi-shell housing which protects the interior of the connector from water and dirt. As shown, the housing comprises a single-piece, inner shell 1 of metal or hard plastics, protected by a soft, flexible jacket 3, which may be of rubber. A flange 5 formed on the jacket 3 seals one end of the hard shell 1 and a conical portion 4 grips and seals a cable. A sealing ring 5 retains the contacts assembly 2 and forms a seal with a mating socket connector. In another embodiment, the flexible jacket is situated inside the hard shell 1 and is formed with collars to locate it inside the shell and to help retain the contact assembly 2. In a further embodiment, a flexible jacket is sandwiched between two hard shells which are formed in halves, the assembly being held together by two pairs of screws.
