Abstract
1,274,777. Two part couplings. ITT INDUSTRIES Inc. 29 July, 1970 [26 Feb., 1970], No. 36705/70. Heading H2E. A two part coupling has a sealing member 22 comprising a rear portion 124 which is sealingly secured on the shell 25 of one part of the coupling, an intermediate bowed portion 126 extending from the rear portion and spaced from the said one part and a front portion 128, such that when the two parts of the coupling are mated the front portion sealingly engages the shell 65 of the other part and the intermediate portion 126 is compressed concertina-wise into a bowed portion. A socket 12 comprises a shell 25 housing insulators 38, 42 retained therein by a ring 44 and containing socket contacts 48 with a crimping portion connected to conductors 56. A plug 24 comprises a shell 65 housing insulators 82, 92 retained therein against a shoulder 76 on the shell 65 and bores 104 each containing a terminal pin 106 with a crimp member 112 connected to a conductor 114. The sealing member 22 which can be made of a siliconized resilient elastomer is secured, e.g. by friction, vulcanizing or bonding, to the surface 18 of the shell 25 and on mating the plug and socket the portion 128 engages the flared surface 72 of shell 65, and the intermediate portion 126 is folded concertina-wise equally around the surface 18. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the seal is of zig-zag crosssection and is compressed into a multiple of bowed portions (142, 144, 146) when the plug and socket are mated.
