Abstract

1,213,815. Windows; glazing hinges. F. R. A. JERVIS. 6 Aug., 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 25312/67. Headings E1J, E1R and E2F. [Also in Division F4V] A pivoted panel structure such as a window, or ventilator comprises a fixed plastics or metal (al.) outer frame 24, Fig. 2 the lower rail, Fig. 4 the upper rail, or 26, Fig. 6 a mullion provided on two opposite inner and outer peripheral sides with undercut grooves 40, the inner peripheral grooves mounting a supplementary liner or flat sealing trim strip 42 e.g. of polypropylene equal in width to that of the frame member 24, 26 &c and formed integrally on the outer face thereof with four part circular ribs 44 which snap engage with the undercut grooves 40 and on the inner surface, carries centrally and integral therewith flexible sealing strip 46 of blade-like form or a rib in cross-section in the form of an arrow head connected to the strip 42 by a necked portion, this sealing strip 46 being adapted to cooperate with a similar arrowlike sealing strip 90 surrounding the outer edge surface of the sash 30 or other panel when closed to provide a weather proof seal between the sash or panel and frame, the strips 46, 90 being then so disposed that their medial planes are substantially coincident and parallel and the strips overlap. The invention is also applicable to louvres, (Fig. 10 not shown) in which each louvre includes a frame member surrounding its entire periphery of the panel with the exception of 'at the pivot mounting, the seal strips (90) being integral with the louvre frames with the surrounding fixed frame (20), the strips (90) on the movable frames (64) engaging with each other in the closed position of the louvres. Figs. 2 and 4 indicate how different thicknesses of. glass 62 may be accommodated with the ribs 90 integral with the sash members. Fig. 2, or with the glazing bead 84 Fig. 4 and 6. The left hand portion of Fig. 6 shows how the fixed pane 52 is secured in the mullion 86 by two removable stops 60 sprung into the grooves 40. There ribs fitting in grooves in the glazing beads 54 to secure'the beading. The upper and lower pivots of the opening sash 30, which pivots are located a short distance from one side stile to allow cleaning of the outer surface of the frame from inside the building, the lower rail is provided with a handle 65, Fig. 2,'to retain the sash in its closed position. Each pivot mounting comprises a bearing member 66 which is slid into the hollow frame upper or lower rail 24 and is provided with sides 68 parallel with the walls 32, 34 to prevent rotation of the bearing member formed with a socket 70 having a screw-thread formation 72 affording helical ribs and grooves of V-shaped cross-section. The pivot mountings 64 each comprise a trunnion 82 having screw thread complementary to the formation 72 so that the bearing member 66 supports the trunnion in a rotatable manner and constitutes a thrust bearing for the trunnion. The ribs may be circular instead of helical, in which case the .bearing is made in two halves clamped together and sandwiching the trunnion between them.
