Abstract

1,213,731. Escapements. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. May 22, 1968 [June 21, 1967], No.24517/68. Heading G3T. [Also in Division F2] An escapement mechanism comprises a continuously driven wheel 41 having circumferentially extending teeth 50 movable between the teeth of a wheel 33 having means for continuously applying a torque thereto, each tooth 50 having a portion preventing rotation of the wheel 33, and a portion, e.g. a deflectable terminal portion, allowing escapement of a tooth of the wheel 33. The wheel 41 is secured to a shaft 11 driven at constant speed and driving via gears 12, 13 a worm gear 16 to which is fixed a drum 20. The latter receives a spiral spring 25 secured to the shaft 17 of the wheel 33 and to a friction shoe 27 engaging the inner surface of the drum 20. The spring 25 is wound during the intervals when rotation of the wheel 33 is prevented, and unwinds to advance the wheel 33 when rotation thereof is permitted by the teeth 50. The wheel 33 may be halted at intervals by the spring pressed armature of an electromagnet 70 so that it does not always rotate when permitted to do so by the teeth 50. The armature is actuated to free the wheel 33 when the electromagnet is energized by electrical pulses generated electromagnetically in a sensor 82 by projections 83 on a wheel 81 rotated by the shaft 11.
