Abstract

1,213,190. Nitriding tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 20, 1968 [Jan. 15, 1968], No. 60795/68. Heading C7U. The internal surfaces of ferrous alloy tubes are nitrided by contacting the said surfaces with an activator and flowing ammonia having a degree of dissociation between 15% and 50% through the tube at a temperature from 850‹F. to 1200‹F., the direction of ammonia flow being reversed at intervals of not greater than 30 minutes. Inert gas may be flowed through the tube while heating to and cooling from the nitriding temperature. The nitriding gas may be flowed through the tube between manifolds at either end thereof and each manifold may contain an amount of decomposable activator such as polyvinyl chloride, organic acid phosphate, ammonium chloride, ammonium bifluoride, sulphamic acid or mixtures thereof preferably in amounts up to 3 grams per square foot of surface to be nitrided.
