Abstract

1,212,539. Electro precipitators. GOURDINE SYSTEMS Inc. 14 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966], No. 51840/67. Heading B2J. An E.G.D. precipitator comprises spaced dielectric plates 130, Fig. 1, contoured to provide converging inlets 131 and diverging outlets 132. Flat conducting plates 132a extend upstream from the plates 130 and attract an ionizing discharge in cooperation with ionizing wires 133. Particles in the gas flowing through the apparatus are precipitated on to a collecting chamber surface 138 and descend under gravity through an exit between that chamber wall and a gas conduit 136. The mobility of particles can be controlled by injecting particles via nozzles 140 to form an aerosol. A conductor 142 supported by arms 143 has a tip 142a exposed to gas flow, so that the space charge downstream is increased but a minimum field gradient normal to the flow path is still maintained. In an alternative arrangement, two attractor electrodes are used with an adjustable potential divider for the E.H.T. supply, so that the ionizing field length is increased and the probability of charging of entrained particles is increased. A further embodiment employs a plurality of increasing-diameter collectors 160, 162, Fig. 3, which permit classification of particles due to changes of gas velocity through the collectors.
