Abstract

1,152,218. Electrostatic separators. M. CARTA, G. FERRARA, C. DELFA and R. CICCU. 25 Oct., 1966 [25 Oct., 1965], No. 47935/66. Heading B2J. An electrostatic separator comprises a looped duct 1, Fig. 1, supplied with compressed carrier gas along the outer wall and having two interfacing equally-spaced or parallel electrodes 2, 3, terminating in downstream diverging end portions 4, 5, which each define an opening respectively in the inner and outer walls of the duct. Granules to be separated are fed into the duct at 13. The openings are adjusted in width by movable vanes 6, 8 and the rate of air flow by a movable vane 11. In operation, the granules are triboelectrically charged. In a second embodiment, additional carrying electrodes 14, 15, Fig. 2, are provided and the electrode 15 may be a metal plate with upstanding edges carrying a bundle of tungsten wires, spaced from the main body of said plate, or may comprise metal gauze or perpendicular blades. Charging of the granules may take place concurrently with or independently of frictional charging. In a third embodiment, ionizing and backing electrodes 17, 18, Fig. 3, are provided upstream of a charged electrode 16, which produces a charge reversal on the granules. The electrode 3 may be modified in shape to produce a change in airflow and the electrode 2 may be replaced by a system of louvres to separate metallic ore granules which have a rapid charge inversion characteristic, e.g. galena, pyrite, ion and manganese ores.
