Bending and forming.-Roller machines for rolling, or shaping, or bending strips of metal and other material, more especially for rolling rims for wheels of pneumatic or other tyres, are constructed so as to permit of ready assemblage and adjustment of the rollers. The invention comprises three features : (1) The preliminary bending rolls are mounted in housings A so that the rolls and their driving connexions can be longitudinally adjusted in the machine frame B. (2) The shafts D<5>, D<6> of these rolls are driven by spur-wheels D<3>, D<4> operated by a third spur-wheel D<2> on the shaft D<1> of a worm-wheel D, the wormwheels D being driven by worms C' splined to a common longitudinal driving-shaft C. This construction permits the assemblage or withdrawal of the rolls X from the side of the machine on which the spur-wheels are mounted. (3) The final bending of the rims into circles of the required diameter is effected by coiling the rim as delivered by the rolls X by means of three rollers which are adjustable relatively to a central roller, and these four rollers are all mounted in a frame which is laterally adjustable relatively to the frame B, the rollers being driven by worm gearing from the shaft C, this gearing being so arranged that a key and slot permits the drive to be maintained in any lateral position of the adjustable frame. Recesses A* are machined in the housings A and machined projections B* engage these to give a sliding fit to the housing, which is held in its adjusted position by engagement of the heads of bolts A<1> in T-shaped slots B<1> when nuts A<2> are tightened. The worm gearing for the rolls X is mounted in boxes E which are adjustably mounted in a manner similar to the housings A. The boxes E are fitted with ball bearings C<4> for taking the end-thrust of the worm. A guide is employed to deliver the bent rims in the form of a spiral from which the wheels are finally made.
