Abstract
409,340. Rolling-mills. KOPPEL, R. H., 227, Maria Theresia Allee, Aachen, Germany. Oct. 26, 1932, No. 29999. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1931. [Class 83 (iv).] A rolling-mill comprises four rolls 9 carried by shafts 7 which are driven by shafts 4 through worm or bevel gearing 6 so that the roll shafts may be rocked about the centre of the drive shafts 4 without interfering with the drive. The drive shafts may be intergeared by a chain or by a gear train or by an internally or externally toothed spur gear 2. The roll shafts are mounted in housings 8 journalled on the shafts 4 the housings being provided with one or more slots 15 for the reception of locking bolts which engage with T-slots in the machine framing. A bolt 13 at the roll end of the housing is locked after the roll has been roughly set, fine adjustment of the roll being effected by movement of the housing by nuts 22, Fig. 5, on a gudgeon 19 carried by the bolt 13. The frame 1 is provided with a central bore for guiding the work, and the roll mechanism may be duplicated on each side of the frame. To maintain the roll pass axial, irrespective of the size of the rolls, the roll shafts are mounted in bearings 27 which move axially under the control of a lug 28 guided in a cam groove on the framing, when the housing is swung about the drive shaft. The rolling mills may be mounted as units in series as in Fig. 10 which shows an electric motor 31 driving a main shaft 32 from which shafts 35, 36, 39 are driven at progressively higher speeds, the shaft 35 driving four rolling mills 30 and the remaining shafts 36, 39 each driving two rolling mills.
