Abstract

A wire mesh comprises interconnected longitudinal and transverse rods 4, 5 in which the spacing of the ends of associated pairs of longitudinal rods is different at either end 4c, 4d. The ends of the longitudinal rods are bent to form hooks. The end spacings allow mats to be overlapped over a support beam 2 to form a roadway. The hooks at end 4c engage the top of the beam and are connected by a continuous rod 12. The hooks 4d, which are connected by short rods 8, engage the top of the beam when the mat is stressed. Further stressing bends the hooks until rods 8, 12 engage.
