1,210,340. Derivatives of cyclohexenecarbinols. ORTHO PHARMACEUTICAL CORP. 12 May, 1969 [14 May, 1968], No. 24118/69. Heading C2C. Novel compounds I in which R is H, OH, C 1-8 alkoxy, C 1-8 alkyl, C 1-4 alkylamino or dialkylamino, acetoxy or isobutyryloxy; R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-20 alkyl, C 2-20 alkenyl, cycloalkyl-C 1-3 alkyl, adamantyl, pyridyl, furyl, C 2-6 carboxy-alkyl and alkali metal salts, esters and amides of said carboxy group; R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are C 1-3 alkyl; and the dotted line represents a 3- or 4-double bond are prepared by esterification of the appropriate carbinol with R<SP>1</SP>COOH or a derivative thereof or by dehydration of compounds II Intermediates isolated are [2-methyl-3-ethyl-4- hydroxy - 4(o - anisyl) - cyclohex - 1 - yl]methanol, prepared by reduction of the appropriate cyclohexane carboxylic acid; [2-methyl-3-ethyl-4- hydroxy - 4(o - anisyl) - cyclohex - 1 - yl]methyl hexanoate, prepared from the first-named intermediate; and [2-methyl-3-ethyl-4-(p-hydroxy-phenyl) - 4 - cyclohexen - 1 - yl] methanol and [2- methyl - 3 - ethyl - 4 - (p - dimethylaminophenyl) - 3 - and 4 - cyclohexen - 1 - yl] methanol, prepared from the appropriate cyclohexene carboxylic acids. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound I together with a suitable excipient, are administered orally or parenterally and have activity as reproduction-suppression agents.
