Abstract
1,210,245. Balancing; driving gear. V. HERON. Sept.27, 1967, No.23108/67. Headings F1B and F1M. An unsymmetrically operating machine has a chamber with a wall 17 that is movable so as to increase and decrease the volume of the chamber, a shaft 2 connected to the movable wall of the chamber so that as the wall moves the shaft turns, a counterflywheel 8, 9 connected to the shaft so that the shaft and counterflywheel turn in opposite directions at a fixed speed ratio and means for transmitting power to or from the shaft. The algebraic sum of the moments of inertia of all the rotating parts of the machine about axes parallel to the shaft each multiplied by the positive or negative ratio of its speed relative to the speed of the shaft is approximately zero. As shown the machine is an internal-combustion engine driving the rotor 1 of an electric generator but the invention is stated to be applicable to other machines, for example gas generators and air and refrigeration compressors driven by electric or other motors.
