Abstract

1,208,972. Glow discharge lamps. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 12 March, 1968, No. 11945/68. Heading H1D. The cathodes 5 of a gas-filled glow discharge symbol indicator tube are stacked together with insulators 6 on the upper and lower members 3 and 4 of a rectangular wire frame to form a sub-assembly which is mounted on a glass base 7 having leads 8 sealed therethrough and is surrounded by a cylindrical grid or mesh anode secured to the frame and closely surrounded by a tubular glass envelope portion 18 sealed to the base 7, a blackened background screen 11 being provided behind the cathodes 5. The construction provides a large ratio of size of symbol to size of envelope. The anode is secured to the frame by tabs 12. Alternative forms of grid and helical wire anodes are described (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). The screen 11 may alternatively be an internal or external coating on the envelope 18 which is provided with an exhaust tubulation 19. The leads to the cathodes are clamped between a pair of protective mica discs 13.
