Thermoset water-in-oil emulsions in which the oil phase is copolymerized and the water phase is retained as discrete droplets dispersed throughout the polymerized oil phase are prepared by (A) adding water to a polymerizable material which constitutes the oil phase of the emulsion comprising (a) an unsaturated polyester of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and (b) a copolymerizable solvent and an emulsifier having an HLB number of from 2 to 8 which is a glycerolysis product of vegetable oils, a saturated mono- and di-glyceride ester of stearic acid, a saturated mono-glyceride of stearic acid, or mixtures thereof, (B) agitating the resulting mixture to form a stable water-in-oil emulsion, and (C) curing the oil phase of the emulsion to give the thermoset water-in-oil emulsion. The term " water " includes aqueous solutions of non- interfering organic and inorganic materials as well as impure solutions consisting predominantly of water. The HLB number, i.e. the hydrophile-lipophile balance, is as defined by Griffin (J. Soc. Cosm. Chem. 1949, 311). The thermoset emulsion may be dehydrated, e.g. by contacting the water present in the emulsion with azeotroping amounts of an azeotrope-forming, solvent to give a cellular product. The polyesters used in the examples were prepared from propylene glycol, maleic anhydride and isophthalic anhydride, the solvent was styrene, the catalyst benzoyl peroxide paste and the promoter dimethyl toluidine.
