Abstract

1,207,854. Sodium hydrogen sulphite. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 6 Oct., 1967 [13 Oct., 1966], No. 45817/67. Heading C1A. SO 2 is absorbed in the first stage of an absorption process by an aqueous solution of Na 2 SO 3 and NaRSO 3 , and the depleted SO 2 passes to a second absorption column, where it is washed with a similar solution, e.g. containing 180 to 230 g/l. of Na 2 SO 3 with corresponding concentrations of 220 to 140 g/l. respectively of NaHSO 3 , at pH 6 to 7. The pH of the solution in the second stage is maintained by the addition of aqueous NaOH solution of concentration 10-40% by weight, or of aqueous Na 2 CO 3 solution, and the whole process is maintained at a temperature of 15‹ to 90‹ C. The effluent of the second absorption stage is partly cycled as washing liquid for the first stage via a buffering vessel, and partly recycled through the second stage, the amount of recycle depending on the rate of removal of NaHSO 3 from the system and being such that precipitation of Na 2 SO 3 in the absorption columns is avoided. The effluent of the first stage is run off as product via a buffering vessel, whence it may be partly recycled through the first stage to allow for fluctuations in the SO 2 content of the feed gases, which may be roasting gases or other SO 2 -containing gases. The product solution contains 30 to 45% NaHSO 3 by weight.
