Abstract
Germanium tetrachloride is obtained from material containing finely divided germanium by reacting the material with an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal hypochlorite and an alkali metal hydroxide, filtering the solution and adding to it hydrochloric, nitric or sulphuric acid to bring the pH to below 7, then adding excess of ammonia to form a precipitate, and distilling germanium tetrachloride from a mixture of the precipitate and hydrochloric acid. In an example sludge from a machine used for sawing and lapping germanium is freed from as much oil and water as possible, boiled in a solution of sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid is added, followed by ammonia, the precipitate is removed and heated with hydrochloric acid and germanium tetrachloride distilled off and recovered. The germanium tetrachloride may be hydrolysed with water to germanium dioxide, and the germanium dioxide may be reduced to germanium by heating in hydrogen.
