Abstract

1,204,709. Surgical syringes. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 9 Oct., 1967, No. 46140/67. Heading A5R. A hypodermic syringe comprises a cartridge with a plunger and needle and a resilient cylindrical cartridge holder 44 with a neck 48 at the forward end and a projection 52 having a wedge portion on its interior wall, the arrangement being such that the projection is distorted as the cartridge is inserted axially in the holder and, when the cartridge is wholly inserted, engages a recessed portion 16. Three inwardly directed projections 52 each comprising wedge portions (54 Fig. 5) whose least radial dimension is rearmost are evenly spaced around the internal periphery of the holder rearwardly of the neck 48. The cartridge holder has a finger grip 46 and longitudinal internal ribs 50 which are integral with the projections 52. The hub 20 of a hypodermic needle 36 is secured to the cartridge neck by a spun aluminium ring 24 and the needle has a guard 38 which on removal may be used as a plunger for operating the cartridge piston 12. A plastics cylinder 60 is removably mounted around the needle guard and alternatively may be used as a plunger for the piston 12. The cartridge is sealed at the forward end by a diaphragm (28, Fig. 2) which, when pressure is applied to the piston 12 is ballooned into the needle hub 20 and, when it contacts knife edges (32) in the needle hub, bursts for discharge of medicament.
