Abstract

1,265,686. Hypodermic syringes. BECTON, DICKINSON & CO. 29 Aug., 1969 [29 Aug., 1968], No. 43170/69. Heading A5R. A packaged hypodermic needle assembly 20 for use with a syringe barrel 32 having a piston 37, comprises a needle 21 having a hub 22 and a tubular shield 23 open at one end and mounted on the hub 22 to enclose the needle and hub, the shield 23 having internal ribs 27 which co-operate with ribs 28 on the hub 22 to hold the hub and needle out of contact with the shield, and a closure 24 sealing the open end of the shield and removable for securing the needle to the barrel, the shield being shaped so that it may serve as a plunger for the piston. A shoulder 29 on the shield engages a lip 26 of the hub. The assembly may also comprise an inner shield (51) Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown) to protect the needle when the outer shield has been removed. The lower end of the barrel is covered by a cap (40) Fig. 3 not shown when the barrel is not in use. One or more combinations of a needle assembly and a barrel may be packaged together (Fig. 1 not shown).
