Abstract

[Also in Division H5] A space heating device comprises a surface 10 emitting radiant heat and a screen, which may be in one or two parts 2, 3, of a fused silica and has at least one aperture 4 for the transmission of radiant heat. The screen is translucent and the top portion may be illuminated by a light. The screen may be flat or curved. The surfaces 10 may comprise a surface combustion heater (gas or oil) or an electric heating element. If the radiant heaters are not positioned opposite an aperture reflectors are provided to reflect the radiation through the apertures. The apertures may be of the same or different shape or area and may be in a regular or irregular pattern. A heat exchanger 16 may be provided using hot combustion waste gas to warm air entering via inlets 23 and delivered from outlets 25 to the space to be heated. Thermostatic control of the heat output (not described in detail) may be provided.
