A heating apparatus comprises a source of radiant heat and a plate of heat resistant crystalline glass spaced from the source, the glass comprising SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , Li 2 O and ZrO 2 and having a thermal expansion coefficient less than 20 x10<SP>-7</SP> <SP>‹</SP>C.<SP>-1</SP>. In a gas heating appliance, the burner, the spacing of the plate from the source, or a supplementary fuel supply is arranged so that the maximum temperature in the space between the source and the plate is at least 800‹ C., so that the wavelength of the radiant heat falls outside the absorption band of the glass plate. Crystalline glasses of the composition described in Specification 1,010,513 may be used.
