Abstract
1,204,145. Separating mercury and alkalimetal hydroxide. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 25 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966], No. 43553/67. Heading CIA. [Also in Division C7] Alkali-metal hydroxide is produced during the recovery of mercury from alkali-metal amalgam using a device which comprises a decomposition chamber which is separated from a washing chamber by means 16, such as a sieve, which is permeable to mercury and retains a solid catalyst 17, such as graphite, in the decomposition chamber, the washing chamber having at least two intermediate plates which are in the form of upright cones, 3 and 5, alternating with suspended inverted truncated cones 2 and 4, the distance apart of the plates being adjustable. The upright cones are suitably provided with radial guide ribs which are preferably arranged symmetrically with respect to the axis of the cone. Amalgam flows in through conduit 1 and is decomposed as it descends through graphite packing 17 and through sieve bottom 16, and flows in countercurrent to the mercury. Alkali metal hydroxide e.g. NaOH is removed via conduit 8 and hydrogen through conduit 9.
