Abstract

[Also in Divisions B2, C3 and E1] A waterproof, thermally insulating cover is applied to a surface 10 by mixing an aerated aggregate of expanded clay or pulverized fuel ash with a quantity of cationic bitumen emulsion sufficient to cause the aggregate particles to adhere, applying the mixture 11 to the surface 10 and either rolling or tamping it or coating it with a waterproof filler before applying one or more layers of bitumen impregnated felt 12. One or more layers of mastic asphalt 13 may be applied. Cationic bitumen may be poured over the surface of the mixture 11, followed by a sprinkling of sand to fill the interstices on the upper surface. The aggregate is preferably a mixture of pieces of #-# inch mesh and #-¥ inch mesh to facilitate close packing and “-¢ gallon of emulsion is applied per cubic foot of aggregate. An air duct 15 which is Open to the mixture 11 may be provided.
