Abstract
1,201,683. Rawhide. SUPERIOR PET PRODUCTS Inc. May 31, 1968, No.26227/68. Heading C6C. A method of making rawhide for simulated animal bones and the like from unhaired, at least partly delimed, and untanned hides having a pH of 9-11 comprises the steps of washing the hides to remove enzymes, bleaching the washed hides in hydrogen peroxide, and thereafter wringing out the bleached hides. After treatment the pH value is arranged to remain not less than 9. To ensure this washing is carried out in a drum rotating at 12 r.p.m. for not more than 30 minutes to one hour at 60 to 70 degrees fahrenheit which is sufficient to remove the enzymes so that the hide does not deteriorate during the bleaching. The latter step is carried out in two stages, viz: four hours in a drum during which the drum is rotated every 14-15 minutes for five turns at 12 r.p.m., followed by a further four hours giving the same intermittent rotation to the drum but at an elevated temperature of 85 to 110 degrees fahrenheit. The hydrogen peroxide concentration is preferably 17% by weight of water in the drum.
