Abstract

1,201,382. Shaft encoders; Counters. GENERAL ELECTRIC, and ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 4 March, 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 11414/67. Headings G4D and G4H. The position of an indicating wheel 1 e.g. of a meter is signalled by cored coils 4 arranged in an arc inside the wheel, adjacent magnets 3 moving with the wheel, adapted to alter the permeability of the cores. A permanent magnet 9 is situated adjacent the coils to provide a biasing field increasing the response of the coils. As the wheel rotates ten different combinations of signals are produced from the four coils. The coils are supplied with alternating current from an oscillator and the change in permeability is detected to produce corresponding binary signals. A number of wheels are arranged together in a pack the first being operated by a ratchet by incoming pulses, and subsequent wheels being operated by carry mechanisms. The apparatus may be used to signal electric power consumption from scattered meters, e.g. in a block of flats, to a central indicator in the basement.
