A railway wagon has two sliding roof parts 1, 1, Fig. 2, each being operable and closable by an associated apparatus comprising a rope 4 connected through a spring 3 to a roof rib 2 near one end wall of the wagon, the other end of the rope 4 being fixed to a rope drum 9, Fig. 4, on a transverse horizontal shaft 8 carried by a central transverse wagon member 7. The drum 9 also has secured thereto one end of a second rope 10, wound thereon in the opposite direction to the rope 4, the other end of the rope 10 being connected by a spring 13 to a roof rib 14 near the centre of the wagon, the arrangement being such that when the drum is rotated by a hand crank 16 selectively from either side of the wagon the end of the roof part adjacent the centre of the wagon is first lifted, the rope 4 wound on to the drum and the rope 10 unwound therefrom to cause the roof part to be moved horizontally, longitudinally of the wagon over the top of the other roof port. The rope 4 is connected to the spring 3, which is connected to the rib 2, by passing round a pulley 6 on a roof rib 5. As shown in Fig. 4, the drum 9 for each roof part 1 has end dog members in the form of wheels 28 which co-operate with a slotted bar 29 on the roof part. Initial rotation of the drum is permitted by the yielding of the spring 3 and the dogs then cause the bar 29 and thus the roof part end to lift, wheels 33 on the roof part coaoting with sloping surfaces 30 on the member 7. Similar wheels at the other end of the roof part 1 simultaneously coact with ramps 32, Fig. 1, on rails 34 along the top of the wagon. As the roof thereafter moves to the open position over the other roof part the rope 10 passes over a pulley 15 on the member 7. The roof parts are each operable through a transmission compris. ing a rod 17, universal joints and drain and sprocket drives together with a coupling for transmitting the drive to one or other side of the wagon, all as described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown).
