A bobbin hanger, which can be caused to support a hollow bobbin by pushing the end of the bobbin upwards against collar 13 comprises a stem 2 supported on a member 3, the stem 2 carrying at its lower end a pair of pawls 23, 24. A cylindrical guide member 1 having slots 10 to accommodate the pawls is slidable on the stem 2 and a transverse pin 16 in the lower end of the guide member 1 is provided to engage the pawls 23, 24 and swing them outwardly when the stem 2 is inserted in the bore of the bobbin and the guide member 1 is moved upwardly relative to the stem 2. There are also means 28, 29, 30 to temporarily fix the guide member 1 relative to the stem 2 in a first position in which the pawls are swung outwardly and a second position in which the pawls are retracted. As shown, pivoted pawls 23, 24 are forced outwardly to engage with an internally stepped hollow bobbin when the latter is pushed upwards against the collar 13, Collar 13 is thereby lifted upwards and abuts broadened part 4, of cylindrical guide member so as to lift it. The pin 16, which extends horizontally through the lower end of guide member 4, thus forces the pawls 23, 24 apart to engage with the bobbin. The pawls 23, 24 are kept apart by a ball 30 and cam grooves 28 and 29 which prevent the guide member 1 returning to its initial lowest position (shown). The cams 23 and 24 can be moved inwards again by pushing the bobbin upwards so that the ball 30 and cam grooves 28 and 29 permit the guide member (together with its pin 16) to return to its lowest position. The guide member 1 is continually urged downwardly by spring 27. Alternatively, (a) pawls 23, 24 may be urged apart 'by a spring (not shown) (b) collar 13 can be omitted so that the bobbin presses directly against broad portion 4 of the guide member (see also Fig. 8 not shown) (c) guide member can move downwardly only under the action of its own weight. The cap 3 of the bobbin hanger is rotatably mounted on ball bearings 6 which are supported by a threaded screw 5. This screw, and the corresponding aperture in cap 3, may have flat circumferential portions, see Figs 5A and 5B, not shown. A wire brake supported on the cap may act on the bobbin support, see Fig 10, not shown.
