Abstract
1,199,589. Tubular heat exchangers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 27 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 53947/67. Heading F4S. In a heat exchange process between two fluids, a first fluid flows through a bundle of elongated hollow flexible, thin-walled, small diameter tubes 11 formed of an inorganic polymeric material joined to a header wall (not shown) at each end of an elongated hollow casing 1 from a supply to an exhaust conduit 8, 9. The tubes are spaced from the interior wall of the casing to provide a first flow path for the second fluid from an inlet 4 between the casing and the tube bundle and a second flow path for the second fluid which passes through the space between the tubes within the bundle to an outlet 5. Presettable annular baffles 13 are spaced along the bundle in engagement with the interior of the casing and a foraminous sleeve 10 encasing the tube bundle at predetermined points to control, along the length of the bundle, the proportion of second fluid passing along the second flow path relative to that in the first path according to the total amount of second fluid handled per unit time and the desired total amount of heat transferred per unit time. The tubes are positioned relative to one another and restrained against the force of the inwardly and outwardly moving fluid by bonding the tubes to flexible, narrow strip or tape which is interleaved between the tubes in a predetermined pattern in a substantially transversely-extending section across the bundle.
