Abstract

1,199,154. Plate heat exchangers. MAXWELL DAVIDSON EVAPORATORS Ltd. 13 Oct., 1967 [19 Oct., 1966], No. 46661/66. Heading F4S. [Also in Division B1] An evaporator stage in a distillation plant, e.g. a sea water desalination plant, comprises a plurality of pairs of vertically spaced parallel plates 10 arranged side-by-side in a casing 20. The plates of each pair are mirror images of one another and define therebetween a central evaporating passageway 32. Each plate 10 has a top portion 106 bent inwardly to form both a reservoir and a convergent-divergent passage for the liquid to be evaporated, and a bottom portion 1 is kinked at 14 and doubled back to form a channel 15. U-shaped partitions 18 are positioned as shown in these channels 15 to define heating passages 33 for the heating fluid namely steam. The condensate formed from the steam condensing accumulates in the channels 15 before eventually overflowing through recesses 10d in the plates 10 into outlet passages 36. Rubber diaphragms (21, Fig. 6, not shown) are provided to seal the plate and partition arrangement along opposite sides of the casing 20. Resilient diaphragms 22a, to which pressure may be applied, vary the spacing between parts 12 of the adjacent plates as required. Rods 17 floating in the reservoirs control the flow of liquid. Each plate 10 is provided with alternately inwardly and outwardly facing dimples 16. Several such evaporator stages may be arranged in series one above the other such that unevaporated liquid from one stage falls into the reservoirs of the stage below. The excess steam and condensate of one stage forms the heating fluid to be fed to the stage below.
