Abstract

1,198,556. Metal and alkanolamine salts. UGINE KUHLMANN. 26 April, 1968 [27 April, 1967; 8 April, 1968], No. 19957/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] A composition, suitable as a lubricant additive, is a mixture of salts formed by reacting at least one natural or synthetic branched chain aliphatic carboxylic acid having 5-20 C atoms (used alone or in admixture with one or more straight-chain acids) with at least one alkanolamine and with a basic compound of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or lead. The carboxylic acid is preferably an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid prepared by the " oxo " synthesis and having 7-14 C atoms; the alkanolamine may be triethanolamine, triisopropanolamine or mixtures of mono-, di- and triisopropanolamine in which the last mentioned is the major constituent and the metal basic compound is preferably one of Ca or Pb. Amongst numerous examples: (i) CaO, triisopropanolamine and C 9 "oxo " acid are reacted; (ii) a repeat of (i) using BaO instead of CaO; (iii) NaOH, triisopropanolamine and a C 10 " oxo " acid and the corresponding K type; and (iv) PbO, ethylhexanoic acid and triisopropanolamine are reacted.
