Abstract
1,198,117. Rolling. ROTARY PROFILE ANSTALT. 15 Aug., 1967 [2 Aug., 1966], No. 37504/67. Heading B3M. An elongate workpiece having a cylindrical outer surface is reduced by passing it axially through a convergent throat defined either by tapered rolls 12, 14, Fig. 1, or by rollers 40, Fig. 3, the rolls or rollers having convex working formations which reduce the workpiece to a small extent at the throat inlet and outlet and to a greater extent between the inlet and outlet. The rolls 12, 14 are rotated and may have annular or helical grooves 16, the workpiece 18 either being drawn through the throat by the rolls, or propelled through it using feeds 22 and 28. Three co-operating rolls, and also backing rolls, may be employed, the grooves 16 being discontinued at intervals if backing rolls are used. The throat in Fig. 3 is defined by rollers 40 which move in annular grooves 38 in a rotating housing 34, feeds 32 and 35 propelling the workpiece through the throat. Using helical grooves 54, Fig. 5, in which balls 60 or profiled rollers are located, rotation of the housing 50 feeds the workpiece through the throat although an auxiliary feed 64 may be provided. The housing 34 or 50 may be divided into coaxial sections which can be individually rotated, and the halls or rollers may be recirculated, and, if desired, cooled, within the sections.
