Abstract
1,194,559. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 12 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 41535/67. Heading B3R. In welding, e.g. electroslag welding, in which a consumable electrode in a consumable electrode guide is located in the welding gap, melt retaining shoes are mounted on a carriage riding on and movable along the guide. Water-cooled copper shoes 15 are resiliently mounted on brackets 22 adjustably supported on a carriage 9 having arms 7, 8 provided with insulating side facings and passing through the welding gap. The arms 7, 8 have apertures to receive a fixed consumable guide 10 for a welding electrode 11. Welding current is supplied by a cable to a lug 13 on the carriage 9 and is fed to the guide 10 by a spring-loaded wiper 14. A handle 30 when oscillated actuates a stepping device 32 comprising two sleeves 28, 29 in frictional engagement with the guide 10 to raise the carriage as the guide is consumed. In a modification, the carriage has knurled rollers engaging the guide 10, one of the rollers being driven.
